Abstract The stability of the electricity grid will be disrupted by massive integration new renewable energies. Hydropower plants have a major role to play in this transformation market increasing their operational flexibility and ability provide ancillary services. However, may lead an accelerated degradation mechanical components. By changing turbine operating point far from best efficiency or number transient manoeuvres such as start stop sequences, unsteady flow phenomena, cavitation development additional wear tear stress unit’s components impact its lifetime. present work aims preliminary insight on optimization start-up sequence 5 MW reversible Francis pump-turbine equipped with Full Size Frequency Converter (FSFC). goal approaches are determine which minimizes runner damage, penstock fatigue water losses. objective functions evaluated 1D hydraulic simulations SIMSEN software it allow compare relative mitigation between conventional fixed-speed linear variable-speed Converter.
